Shady Marketing

There has been a lot of hooting and hollering about how the Internet Marketing world has turned shady and people are getting scammed more than ever.

Short-term marketing involves using deception to make a quick sale, or using aggressive promises to get a quick hit.

First of all, thats BS.  The internet marketing industry (and most industries) has always had plenty of short term – money making – scam artists who will say just about anything to get people to buy their products.

What has **actually** happened is that we are in the middle of a social revolution and things are much more transparent nowadays.  It’s not as easy for the scammers to get away with their shenanigans anymore.

Short term capitalism has and will always be around because people figure they won’t get caught, or at least will make enough money that it doesn’t even matter that they aren’t going to be around for long.

The short term marketers have always been there… Just most of the time not enough people got screwed over to turn the right heads to get caught for what they have done.

Back in the day if a business did you wrong, you could file a complaint with the BBB, FTC, IC3, Attorney Generals Office, District Attorney or maybe ripoffreport – but the customer really didn’t have any power because they had to simply wait on one of those abbreviated agencies above for something to happen.

Nowadays if a customer gets burned it is still very easy to report it to one of the abbreviated agencies, but it even more easy to post on Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter, (you get the point) and proceed to grab the attention of the business owner (and plenty of other people) in the process.

Businesses of all kinds are being held accountable more than they have ever had to, and it is good for businesses (and people) to have some sort of accountability that they are held to.

One thing that I find to be absolutely hilarious is that just about every new sales letter and video I see now starts off with, “I bet you are sick of the hype, sick of the lies, the BS, the shady marketing…” and then goes on to hype the hell out of their newest, latest, greatest thingamajig for sale using the exact same tactics they frown upon at the beginning of their video.

{cough} – really?

Business is still business and as long as you provide value – to a targeted group who is looking for the value you provide – at a price they are willing to pay – so that your business earns enough revenue to keep running – you should be just fine.

Short term entrepreneurs won’t stay around long.
