7 Lessons Learned From Technical Difficulties

Face it…  Technical difficulties can drive you crazy.  Just about all of us who are technically savvy enough to own and operate a computer have experienced some form of technical difficulty at one point or another.

These 7 tips can be used for many different sorts of technical issues that you could potentially come across while online.

1. Screen-capture and describe.
Take a screencapture or image of the error and write a written description that explains the error. If you have the ability to determine the cause of the error and fix it yourself – fix it at the earliest possible time.  I use Jing for quick screencaptures. A great free resource.

2. Contact someone who can help.
Contact someone who may be able to help fix the issue or the person(s) who are responsible for the error that occurred.  Be mindful of the tone of your email and the language that you use.

3. Stay calm and composed.
This is pretty much common sense, but staying calm and composed only helps the situation.

4. Avoiding ASAP.
Using “ASAP” in all caps should only be used in very urgent matters. If ASAP is over-used – it loses it’s power.

5. Notify the public.
If the problem is in your hands, notify customers OR any one who is effected. Public notification is best option.

6. Re-notify the public when problem is fixed.
Once problem is fixed, have multiple sources verify that it is fixed and proceed to re-notify the public and people affected directly by the technical difficulties.

7. Issue apology.
