Paid Advertising versus User Generated Recommendations

I trust my friends if they tell me that they enjoyed a product or service a heck of a lot more than I trust a paid advertisement on TV, Facebook, the side of the street, or any recommendation from a complete stranger.  Just as I trust my friends reviews of movies a heck of lot more than Ebert or any other stranger who is giving the review.

Why?

Because my friends know me and I know them.  I trust them.  I like them.  And most importantly, I respect their opinion and they have a really good idea of the types of things that I actually like using, buying, doing, eating, and watching.  It’s nothing personal against you, the paying advertiser, and I am quite sure if I got to know you I would trust your recommendations just as I trust my friends recommendations.

Because of our socially connected world, marketing has been, and is changing before our eyes and the most important form of advertising for any company nowadays comes from user generated recommendations.

User generated traffic and recommendations are a cornerstone in the daily deal industry.  Folks want to tell the world when they get a great deal on a solid product or service.  It’s just our nature.

Use that behavioral trait to your advantage.

If you aren’t putting a large focus into making life easy for your users to share, and even more importantly providing remarkable deals, products, and services that are worth sharing and remarking about – you might want to start.  I have a really good feeling that most folks other than me also trust their friends more than they trust a paid advertisement from a stranger.

Make moves today,
